She stood under the stars, their brilliance illuminating the night. A soft breeze tickled her cheek. She sighed, and the words tumbled out of her mouth; “I love you.”

The breeze picked up; trees danced. She heard her words in the rustle of the leaves. “I love you,” repeated the breeze.

The warm air flew south; she heard it cascade through the trees. As the air continued its journey, her whisper became fainter and fainter until she could no longer hear it. A single tear slipped from her eye as she stared into the sky. The stars winked down at her as she began to cry.

After some time had passed, she dried her eyes. She looked over the horizon, wondering if her heart would ever feel whole again. As she turned to go inside, the breeze once again picked up. The trees were insistent as the rustling cascaded towards her.

Warm air circled her face, tangling her hair as it went. The breeze sighed with longing and whispered, “I love you, too.” The tears she had so recently dried began to flow once more. Her cheeks wet, she blew a hasty kiss south. “That’s enough, for now.” She whispered. For now… she didn’t know how much longer she could go without feeling his touch.

With one last look in his direction, she opened the back door and went inside. The faint light of hope began to glow in her heart. As she drifted to sleep alone in her bed, she dreamt of strong arms holding her while a warm breath caressed her face. Perhaps happiness will come again; perhaps it will come soon.
